What’s the issue?

Environmental purists have asserted for years that the country can and must run on wind and solar power only, and the quicker the conversion happens the better off we will be. But then reality set in and states and the federal government have called for delaying the retirement of nuclear plants and are worried about the retirement of coal plants.

Why does it matter?

Delaying the retirement of coal and nuclear plants are for different purposes, but both can lead to a reduction in the need for natural gas to fuel power plants.

What’s our view?

Efforts to delay coal plant retirements are not as strong, but market forces have already delayed some and reliability concerns may delay others, especially within the Midcontinent Independent System Operator region.
