What’s the issue?

Environmental purists insist that there simply is no role for fossil fuels in the future and that accelerating adoption of renewable energy will lead to greater energy security for the Western democracies.

Why does it matter?

A critical element in any plan to reduce emissions through the greater deployment of renewable sources of electricity is the need for storage, and particularly battery storage.

What’s our view?

The amount of battery storage needed to implement an environmental purist’s vision of the future is staggering, to the point where the demand may exceed the total supply of needed resources. In addition, the current supply sources for critical minerals are even more concentrated in fewer nations than fossil fuels and are often from nations that are not politically or environmentally aligned with the Western democracies.
