What’s the issue?
It has been almost a year since Joe Biden became president, succeeding Donald Trump. Trump had professed his love for coal and all fossil fuels and Biden ran as an advocate for the science of climate change.
Why does it matter?
The rhetoric of both presidents would lead one to believe that they have the ability to direct the country’s development of fossil fuels, but the reality is far different.
What’s our view?
While presidents can issue executive orders and even have agencies issue new regulations, truly durable changes come through the legislative process. Given the current polarization in Congress, this means a president’s views on energy policy may have little impact on energy production in this country.
